Part one · The teacher’s mind
The Pendulum
For over a century, language teaching has swung from one extreme to the other. Each generation looked at the last, saw its faults, and lunged the opposite way — translation to immersion, silence to drilling, cold rules to warm feelings, reading to speaking.
Every swing was a reaction. And every reaction threw away something worth keeping.
Great teachers don’t follow the pendulum. They stand still and collect what it throws.
