Adapt in Real Time — Teach with Confidence

Never ask “Do you understand?” The class will nod, and half of them will be lost. Ask in ways that show you the truth — checks for understanding.

Up — I’ve got it. Sideways — I understand but have questions. Down — I’m lost. A silent, honest vote in one second.

Five means fully clear, one means confused. Children scan easily; you scan the whole room at a glance.

Then adjust — quietly, on the spot:

Lengthen your wait time. Silence gives thinking room. Count to five before you rescue them.
Repeat and rephrase. A second listening, and a simpler path to the same idea.
Ask probing questions. “Why? How do you know? Can you tell me more?”
Change your pace — and, always, smile. A smiling teacher lowers anxiety and keeps effort alive.

Teaching is not talking. It is watching — then adjusting.
