Make One Lesson Last

Page 16 · The Craft of a Lesson

One topic need not be one day. Stretch a single plan across two to four lessons by layering review, games and craft — giving children the repetition they need to truly own the words.

DAY 1DAY 2 DAY 3DAY 4
Day 1

Meet it

Introduce the vocabulary; flashcards; the first game.

Day 2

Deepen it

Review; a themed song; read a matching reader; a cut-and-paste craft.

Day 3

Perform it

Review again; act it out; build a creative scene together.

Day 4

Free it

Open play, pen-friend letters, or a small project — language in the wild.

Children do not learn a word by meeting it once. They learn it by meeting it again, in a new game, and again in a song, until it quietly becomes theirs.

Repetition is not the enemy of fun. Disguised repetition is the whole art.
